bi nao = upper arm; outer bone of the arm
Jiao Hui Intersecting point of the Foot Tai Yang (Bladder) and Hand Tai Yang (Small Intestine) channels and Yang Wei Mai (Yang Linking Vessel) on the Hand Yang MIng (Large Intestine) channel
location: Slightly superior to the insertion of deltoid muscle at the deltoid tuberosity, line between Qu Chi (LI-11) and Jian Yu (LI-15), within the lower border of the deltoid muscle.
actions: opens psychic awareness (Finkelstein, p. 10); brightens the eyes; clears vision; promotes the circulation of Xue (Blood); sedates pain; frees the channels and invigorates the collateral vessels
indications: fever and chills; headache; various eye diseases including conjunctivitis; scrofula; stiff neck; pain in arm, shoulder and upper back, esp. inhibiting the lifting of the shoulder and/or arm; brachial neuralgia; thin weak arms; paralysis of upper arm
needle technique: perpendicular or oblique insertion, 0.5 - 0.8 cun, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension; for eye diseases, slant needle upward into deltoid muscle, 0.6 - 1.5 cun
moxa: 3 - 15 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 10 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
combinations:
» with UB-1 and St-1 for eye diseases (Shanghai, p. 228);
» join to LI-15 to provide for anesthesia for the thorax (Shanghai, p. 228);
» with LI-13 to treat scrofulous lumps (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 101)
» with SI-13 and GB-34 for inflammation of the tendon of the supraspinatus muscle, on the affected side (Shanghai, p. 199);
» with nao shang and/or LI-11 for pain in the shoulder or upper arm (Shanghai, p. 228).
