qi zhong = middle of the navel; spirit shrine; spirit's palace gate; spirit deficiency
location: At the center of the umbilicus on the midline.
diagnostic uses: pulsing around CV-8 indicates Spleen Qi Xu (Deficiency), while a puffy navel indicates Kidney Xu (Deficiency) (Matsumoto)
actions: restores collapsed Yang; warms and stabilizes the Yang; warms the Lower and Middle Warmers; strengthens the transporting function of the Spleen and Stomach; dries Dampness and Damp-Cold; disperses masses and regulates Qi; raises placenta and fetus that has slipped or dropped prematurely (Flaws, 1983, p. 45) (D on salt); strengthens connective tissue to aid in treatment of any skin disease (Matsumoto) (D on salt)
indications: apoplexy; heat stroke; cerebral hemorrhage; shock; loss of consciousness; fainting; Xu (Deficiency) headache; lip swelling; incessant lactation; abdominal distension and/or pain; tympanites; intestinal noises and pain; "intestinal noises like sound of flowing water" (Mann, p. 74); simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea; acute and chronic enteritis; intestinal tuberculosis; shock resulting from intestinal adhesions; ascites; chronic diarrhea; rectal and anal prolapse; all urinary disorders including pain, urinary incontinence and retention; edema; leukorrhea with blood; all skin diseases
needle technique: caution: needling forbidden at this point
moxa: moxibustion only, indirect moxa with salt or ginger 10 - 15 minutes; 10 - 20 minutes of indirect moxibustion with a pole; as a connective tissue treatment, moxa on salt at CV-8 can treat any skin disease (Matsumoto)
