signs and symptoms: Joint pain worse with cold and better with warmth, migratory pain, difficult joint movements, sensation of heaviness and numbness in the limbs.
tongue and pulse: thick, white tongue coating, and slow, possibly slippery pulse.
indications: Wind-Damp-Cold Bi Syndrome. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, and bursitis.
cautions and contraindications:
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 20 grams: kadsura (hai feng teng), morus twig (sang zhi).
» 6 grams: notopterygium (qiang huo), pubescent angelica (du huo), cinnamon twig (gui ahi), large-leafed gentian (qin jiao), Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), cnidium (chuan xiong).
» 3 grams: saussurea (mu xiang), mastic (ru xiang), licorice (gan cao).
modifications:
» for Wind Bi syndrome, add siler (fang feng).
» for Cold Bi syndrome, add severe pain with difficult flexion and extension, add aconite (fu zi).
» for Damp Bi syndrome and fixed pain, with numbness and heavy sensation, add stephania (guang fang ji), red atractylodes (cang zhu) and coix (yi yi ren).
» for pain primarily in the upper extremities, add clematis (wei ling xian).
» for pain primarily in the lower extremities, add achyranthes (niu xi) and chaenomeles (mu gua).
