» treatment of overdose should include catharsis with gastric lavage, a demulcent and systemic support

» mild intoxication results in gastrointestinal irritation producing catharsis, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, chills, and convulsions; patients may lose consciousness for up to twelve hours; few deaths ensue (Duke, p. 187)

» Severe intoxication produce a severe cardiotoxic effect due to digitalis-like steroids. Signs and symptoms include fever, somnolence, and coma. The bark is cathartic, producing a watery diarrhea and emesis (AMA, p. 79). Severe cases result in hallucinations, somnolence, and a loss of consciousness. Meningeal symptoms with tonic convulsions may occur (von Oettingen, p. 361)
