Shu Associated point of the Pi (Spleen)
location: 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of T-11, level with GV-6.
actions: regulates Spleen Qi; tonifies the Spleen and Stomach to facilitate digestive transportation and transformation; augments digestion; benefits the Ying (Constructive) Qi; enhances Spleen Yang to mobilize Stagnant Qi; reverses Rebellious Stomach Qi; influences the pancreas (Worsley, 1975, p. B-20); tonifies and harmonizes the Xue (Blood); nourishes and contains the Xue (Blood); facilitates milk production and expedites lactation; warms the Middle Warmer (D); raises Middle Qi; drains Heat Shi (Excess) from the Middle Warmer; resolves Dampness and Phlegm; dispels Cold and relieves pain; softens hard masses; provides strength to the extremities
indications: intermittent fever; fatigue; defective night vision; chronic hemorrhagic diseases; anemia; edema; anorexia; nervous vomiting; vomiting of dark food; esophageal and tracheal pain, esp. constriction of esophagus inhibiting swallowing; thin despite strong appetite; indigestion; gastritis; ulcers; poor digestion; abdominal distension; jaundice; hepatitis; enlargement of liver and spleen; enteritis; colitis; prolapse, esp. stomach or uterus; diarrhea; dysentery; undigested food in stool; chest painful; cough with profuse Phlegm; lumps in the chest and abdomen; insufficient lactation due to Xu (Deficiency); urticaria; weakness in the limbs
needle technique: oblique insertion inferiorly, 0.3 - 0.6 cun, or perpendicular insertion, angled slightly toward spine, 0.5 - 1.0 cun, producing a local sensation of distension, soreness and numbness spreading into lumbar region; caution: be careful not to insert the needle too deeply to avoid puncturing the underlying viscera;
moxa: 3 - 9 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 20 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
