signs and symptoms: Swollen and painful joints (especially of the lower extremities) that are warm to the touch and worse at night, chills, dehydration or emaciation of the body, absence of sweating, headache, dizziness, lower body edema.
tongue and pulse: White, greasy tongue coating, and wiry, slippery pulse.
indications: Recurrent Wind Cold Damp Bi Syndrome. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue disorders, and gouty arthritis.
cautions and contraindications:
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 6 grams: cinnamon twig (gui zhi), white peony (bai shao yao), anemarrhena (zhi mu), ephedra (ma huang), siler (fang feng), white atractylodes (bai zhu), aconite (fu zi).
» 3 grams: honey-baked licorice (gan cao), fresh ginger (sheng jiang).
modifications:
» for a heavy sensation throughout the body which is especially severe in the affected joints, increase the dosage of white atractylodes (bai zhu).
» for symptoms that worsen at night, substitute red peony (chi shao yao) for white peony (bai shao yao).
» for Qi and Yin Xu (Deficiency), add fresh rehmannia (sheng di huang) and achyranthes (niu xi).
