signs and symptoms: Coma, sudden collapse, loss of consciousness, clenched jaw, pale white face, cold breath, purple lips, excessive mucus, cold extremities. Also for fullness, pain, and a sensation of cold in the chest and abdomen with cold extremities, pale white face, and purple lips, and an urge to vomit and defecate without doing either, which may precede a sudden loss of consciousness or coma.
tongue and pulse: pale tongue with a slippery, greasy coating, and deep, slippery pulse.
indications: Wind Stroke from Cold Phlegm Obstructing the Orifices or from Qi Stagnation. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as cerebrovascular accident, encephalitis, seizure disorder, postconcussion syndrome, hysteria,and angina pectoris.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated during pregnancy. To avoid mercury poisoning, cinnabar (Zhu Sha) should not be taken in large amounts or long term, nor should it be heated.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 6 grams: styrax (xu he xiang), birthwort (qing mu xiang), cyperus (xiang fu), terminalia (he zi), white atractylodes (bai zhu).
» 3 grams: sandalwood (tan xiang), benzoin (an xi xiang), mastic (ru xiang), long pepper (bi ba).
» 1 gram: aquilaria (chen xiang), cloves (ding xiang).
» 0.5 grams: borneol (bing pian), rhinoceros horn (xi jiao) (water buffalo horn should be substituted), cinnabar (zhu sha).
» 0.2 grams: musk (she xiang).
administration: Available as patent medicine in modified form. Grind the ingredients into powder and form into pills with honey. Take one 3 grams pills 1-2 times daily with warm water.
