signs and symptoms: Low back or knee pain, weakness or atrophy; red, hot, swollen, and painful feet or knees; thick, yellow, foul-smelling leukorrhea; dark scanty urination, and eczema or sores on the lower extremities due to Dampness.
tongue and pulse: Yellow, greasy tongue coating with rapid pulse.
indications: Lower Warmer Damp-Heat. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as low back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, or gonococcal arthritis; tinea pedis, eczema; urinary tract infection, vaginitis, cervicitis.
cautions and contraindications: Modify formula in cases with Lung Heat or Liver and Kidney Xu (Deficiency).
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» grams: red atractylodes (cang zhu).
» 6 grams: phellodendron (huang bai).
modifications:
» to focus on pain in the lower back and lower extremities, add achyranthes (niu xi), chaenomeles (mu gua), and acanthopanax (wu jia pi).
» for leukorrhea as the major complaint, add red poria (chi fu ling) and euryale (qian shi).
» for sores on the lower extremities as the major complaint, add gentiana (long dan cao), coix (yi yi ren) and adzuki bean (chi xiao dou).
» to tonify the Kidney and Liver, add achyranthes (niu xi).
» for tinea pedis, add coix (yi yi ren), areca seed (bing lang) and chaenomeles (mu gua).
