point analysis
» therapeutic notes:
the actions of many points listed below may seem redundant, nevertheless the basic functions of dispelling Wind, Cold and Dampness, dispersing Qi Stagnation and Xue Yu (Blood Stasis), and strengthening and relaxing the connective tissue are consistently relevant
most points are local to the injury site; however many also exert influence on distal sites
acute injuries usually require dispersal of Stagnation/Stasis through appropriate needling technique as well as selective usage of cupping and/or bleeding
indirect moxa applied to the needle at a local site can be very useful, but generally is reserved until the acute inflammation has subsided unless Cold and Damp are predominant etiologic factors
direct moxa is often indicated with severe pain and Xue Yu (Blood Stasis) after an acute injury, particularly involving the spine
ashi (tender) points are particularly useful sites for needling as the local nature of point selection is more often the dominant rationale for selection, as opposed to organ and systemic relationships
