character typology of Reich and Lowen:
BURDENED/ENDURING (MASOCHIST):

etiology: Child made to choose between doing what it wants at cost of hurting mother or doing what mother wants at cost of hurting self. Child feels stuck, angry, and defeated with no sense of freedom and spontaneity.

characteristics: Outwardly and consciously submissive; suppressed rage, spite; stuckness, trouble getting energy moving, afraid to take risks, difficulty expressing emotions; can't see that they can drop burdens and have fun; do not show pleasure outwardly.

physical appearance: Compressed, thick, charged but energy tightly held; heavy and slumped shoulder, massive body; voice whiny and irritating, may sigh; movement plodding, slow, deliberate.

strengths: Reliable, hard working, persevering, capable of great love and loyalty.

life orientation: "I can be close if I am not free." Remains submissive as the price for intimacy.
