• ROM exercises for involved joint, right away
• strengthening exercises for affected part in beginning in subacute stage
• water exercises: see water exercises for specific body area


hydrotherapy

• heating compress
• ice pack first 24 hrs
• alternating extremity bath after 24 hr.
• subacute: raw onion poultice
• spasms: hot fomentations
• hot sponge bath - if sprain only few hrs. old then sponge with water as hot as can be tolerated (Kellogg, 1918, p. 640)


manipulation

• stage I (acute): rest, ice, compress, elevate = R.I.C.E.
• stage II (sub-acute): begin mobility range of motion work as soon as possible; avoid painful range.
• stage III: rehabilitation exercises
• massage to affected area


electrical and oscillating

• infrared
• diathermy: subacute, chronic, use with exercise for rehabilitation
• ultrasound: subacute, chronic
• TENS: for analgesia
