feng men = wind gate
Gate for entrance and departure of Feng Qi (Wind Qi); Shu point of Bones and Xue (Blood) (Banever, p. 59); Jiao Hui Intersecting point of the Du Mai (Governing Vessel) on the Foot Tai Yang (Bladder) channel
location: 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of T-2.
actions: disperses and eliminates Wind; resolves the Exterior; stimulates preventive response after to exposure to a chill; stimulates sweating; ventilates and dispels pathogenic Heat from the Yin channels; disperses Yang Shi (Excess) in all Yang channels without draining body fluids; dispels Dampness; transforms Phlegm; opens and volatilizes the Lung; regulates and spreads Lung Qi; strengthens the dispersing function of Lung; clears the nose; disperses perverse Heat from the chest; expands and relaxes the chest; regulates Qi circulation; strengthens children who are malnourished (Finkelstein, p. 39)
indications: dizziness; restlessness in bed; fever; delirium from fever; headache; exposure to chilly weather; common cold; influenza; all nasal disorders including sneezing; allergic rhinorrhea; nasal congestion with discharge and epistaxis; bronchitis; pneumonia; pleurisy; pulmonary tuberculosis; asthma; dyspnea; difficult breathing while lying down; vomiting; belching; stiff neck; muscular spasm of the neck; shoulder sprain; chest and back pain; acne of the shoulders and back; abscess of the back; urticaria
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, 0.5 - 1.0 cun, angled slightly toward the spine, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension, sometimes spreading between the ribs; or
oblique inferior insertion, 0.3 - 0.6 cun, angled downward along the muscle, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension; caution: be careful not to insert the needle too deeply to avoid puncturing the lungs;
moxa: 5 - 10 cones of direct moxa
combinations:
» with GB-20 and GV-16 reduces Wind (Finkelstein, p. 39);
» with GV-14 and LI-4 for influenza; cups may be used after needling (Shanghai, p. 169);
» with UB-13 dispels External Evils from the Surface to liberate the Exterior, broadens the chest, and regulates Lung function, esp. Lung Qi (Finkelstein, p. 39; Flaws, 1989, p. 86); for productive cough (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 201);
» with GB-20, UB-11 and UB-13 for common cold (Shanghai, p. 168);
» with UB-13 and Lu-6 for pleurisy (Shanghai, p. 169);
» with St-27, Lu-1 and St-12 disperses perverse Heat in the chest (Su Wen per Finkelstein, p. 39);
