signs and symptoms: Loss of consciousness, clenched jaw, foaming at the mouth, ashen complexion.
tongue and pulse:
indications: Comatose collapse due to Cold Shi (Excess), Rebellious Qi, or Phlegm Obstruction. Use as an emergency measure to restore consciousness. Once this is accomplished, further treatment should be based on the patient's condition and differentiation of patterns. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as apoplexy, lockjaw, or unconsciousness.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated during pregnancy, for loss of consciousness due to Abandoned-type disorders, or for loss of consciousness due to hypertensive crisis, cerebral hemorrhage, or traumatic cranial injuries. This formula is intended only for temporary, emergency use in treating acute symptoms, and not as a substitute for Western medicine. Once consciousness has been restored, the use of this formula should be discontinued.
ingredients:
» gleditsia fruit (zao jiao) and asarum (xi xin).
administration: Grind equal portions of the ingredients into a powder, and administered by blowing a small amount of powder into the nostrils to cause sneezing. Use only a very small amount of powder to avoid inhalation into the lungs. Available in prepared form.
modifications:
» for excessive sputum and saliva, add alum (ming fan).
» to more quickly revive from loss of consciousness, combine with acupuncture points GV-26 (ren zhong) and LI-4 (he gu).
