dietary guidelines

eating principles:
increase fluids
• calorie percentages: 70% complex carbohydrates, protein 12-15%, fat 15-18%
high fiber
• to protect against hemorrhoids, increase cellulose and hemi-cellulose foods in diet
• decerase amount of time sitting

therapeutic foods:
• cranberries, black fungus, water chestnut, buckwheat, tangerines, figs, plums, fish, prunes, guavas, bamboo shoots, mung beans, winter melon, black sesame seeds, persimmons, bananas, squash, cucumbers, tofu, Cooling foods, lubricating foods, Qi-tonifying foods
• blueberries, blackberries, cherries

fresh juices:
• carrot (Walker, p. 140)
• carrot and spinach (Walker, p 140)
• carrot, spinach, turnip, and watercress (Walker, p. 140)
• carrot, celery, spinach, and parsley (Walker, p. 140)

specific remedies:
• narrow, raw potato slice inserted in anus (Shefi)
• 1/4 cup flax seed tea strained and inserted in anus as a retention enema at bedtime (Shefi)
• eat black fungus with rice every morning for breakfast on empty stomach for 1 month (Ni, p. 132)
• roast and grind black sesame seeds and eat with honey and water every night before bed (Ni, p. 132)
• steam or soak figs, add honey and steam again several times until soggy and eat every day (Ni, p. 132)
• take 2 half ripe bananas, including the skin and steam with water in a covered pot. Mash and eat twice daily (Yin-fang and Cheng-jun, p. 65)
• take 90 g of skinned water chestnuts and eat twice daily (Yin-fang and Cheng-jun, p. 69)
• cover 1 kg fresh or 0.5 kg dried crushed pumpkin seeds with water and simmer. Wash affected area two to three times daily for 5-7 days (Yin-fang and Cheng-jun, p. 101)
• take 6 g of charcoal made from chestnut shells, grind into powder, add 30 g candied honey, thin with a little boiling water and serve (Yin-fang and Cheng-jun, p. 108)
• simmer swiss chard until water has thickened and use to wash affected parts, squat over the steaming liquid (Chao-liang, Qing-rong, Bao-zhen, p. 42)

avoid:
• coffee, spicy foods, fried foods, lack of exercise, sitting or standing for too long, smoking, • stimulating foods, meat, alcohol, hot sauces, fatty foods, rich foods, salty foods, sugar and • sweet foods


supplements

• Collinsonia root
• Vitamin E 400-800 IU per day
• Vitamin C 2-3 g per day Helps build up the connective tissue around the hemorrhoids
• Vitamin A 25,000 IU per day Enhance the healing and integrity of the epithelial cells. (Marz, 1989)
• Bioflavonoids 1-3 g per day Strengthens cell membranes.
• Flaxseed oil 2 Tbsp per day Acts physically as a lubricant, builds up the mucosal membranes and enhances prostaglandin production.
Flaxseed powder
Psyllium seed powder: Softens stool and increases the number of bowel movements.
