Ginseng and Zizyphus C. = Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan = "Emperor of Heaven's Special Pill to Tonify the Heart"

signs and symptoms: Anemia, emotional instability, forgetfulness, irritability, palpitations with anxiety, fatigue, insomnia with very restless sleep, poor concentration, nocturnal emissions, sores of the mouth and tongue, low-grade fever, night sweats, dry stools.
tongue and pulse: red tongue with little coating, and thin, rapid pulse.
indications: Heart and Kidney Yin Xu (Deficiency) (Kidney and Heart not Communicating). With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as neurasthenia, insomnia, amnesia, emotional instability, aphthous ulcers, palpitations, heart disease, nocturnal emission, night sweats, menopausal syndrome, and chronic urticaria. It is especially useful for patients who have taken tranquilizers or sleeping pills for so long that the drugs no longer have an effect.
cautions and contraindications: Because this formula contains cinnabar (zhu sha), it should not be taken long-term. Note that some of the prepared formulations do not contain cinnabar (zhu sha). Contraindicated for a person with Spleen and Stomach Xu (Deficiency) with loose stools, or Phlegm-Damp Stagnation.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 10 grams: fresh rehmannia (sheng di huang).
» 9 grams: scrophularia (xuan shen), ophiopogon (mai men dong), asparagus (tian men dong), salvia (dan shen), poria (fu ling), biota (bai zi ren), schizandra (wu wei zi), zizyphus (suan zao ren).
» 6 grams: Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), polygala (yuan zhi), platycodon (jie geng), ginseng (ren shen).
modifications:
» for severe palpitations and insomnia, add longan (long yan rou) and fleeceflower stem (ye jiao teng).
» for severe dry mouth and throat, add dendrobium (shi hu).
