hypochlorhydria
diagnoses

definition and etiology

definition:
decreased secretion of hydrochloric acid from the stomach

etiology:
Although generally associated with aging, hypochlorhydria can affect anyone at any age. Low thyroid or possibly seasonal allergies have been implicated in some cases (Easley).

signs and symptoms

signs and symptoms:
• bloating, eructations, burning immediately after a meal
• after eating, food feels like a "lump in the stomach"
• constipation or diarrhea is occasionally present
• brittle fingernails, hair loss (in women)
• acne rosacea, vitiligo, pernicious anemia and other diseases are have been associated with low gastric HCl

lab findings:
• (+) Heidelberg capsule analysis for low HCl
• (+) stool analysis for meat fibers

course and prognosis

Although low HCl is relatively benign, its effects can be insidious and progressive, since poor digestion has many long-term complications, including compromised absorption of many essential nutrients. Bowel toxemia (q.v.) and food sensitivities (q.v.) may follow the presence of maldigested foodstuffs in the intestines for extended periods.

differential diagnosis

• insufficient pancreatic enzymes or bile
• food sensitivities
• other gastrointestinal disorders
