yao shu = lumbar hollow/correspondence
Independent Associated point of the renal area (Mann, p. 78)
location: On the posterior midline at the sacral hiatus.
actions: expels Wind and dissipates Dampness; stimulates parathyroids; treats thyroid imbalance (Matsumoto); warms the Lower Warmer; strengthens lumbar spine and knees; frees the channels and invigorates the collaterals
indications: epilepsy; fever without perspiration; hemorrhoids; rectal prolapse; bloody stool; enuresis; urinary incontinence due to paraplegia; dark urine; spermatorrhea; irregular menstruation; difficult labor; pain in lateral costal region; lumbosacral pain and stiffness; sciatica; paralysis and coldness of lower limbs, esp. feet
treatment note: important that patient be advised to avoid sexual relations after this point has been treated (Finkelstein, p. 77)
needle technique: perpendicular or oblique insertion, 0.5 - 1.0 cun, toward sacral hiatus, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension
moxa: 3 - 5 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 10 minutes of indirect moxibustion with a pole
combinations:
» GV-2 (+ and 3 - 15 cones of direct moxa) with GB-30 (+ and D) for obstinate Cold-Bi and Wind-Cold conditions (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 372)
» with CV-3, GV-20, Kd-12 and Sp-6 for chronic prostatitis (Shanghai, p. 650).
