signs and symptoms: Loose stools or watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, abdominal fullness, gastrointestinal weakness, borborygmus, pale complexion.
tongue and pulse: pale tongue with a white coating, and thin, moderate or deficient moderate pulse.
indications: Spleen Qi Xu (Deficiency) leading to Dampness. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as anorexia during convalescence, chronic bronchitis, chronic gastroenteritis, indigestion, chronic hepatitis, leukorrhea, uterine bleeding, chronic nephritis, chronic diarrhea, diabetes mellitus, malabsorption syndromes, and malnutrition (especially in children).
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated in cases with Shi (Excess) syndromes; use only with caution and significant modification in cases with Heat from Yin Xu (Deficiency).
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 20 grams: coix (yi yi ren).
» 15 grams: lotus seed (lian zi rou), dolichos (bai bian dou).
» 10 grams: dioscorea (shan yao), poria (fu ling).
» 9 grams: ginseng (ren shen), white atractylodes (bai zhu).
» 6 grams: platycodon (jie geng).
» 3 grams: cardamon (sha ren), honey-baked licorice (zhi gan cao).
modifications:
» with Qi Stagnation, add citrus (chen pi).
» for coughing up copious, watery sputum, add citrus (chen pi), pinellia (ban xia) and apricot seed (xing ren).
» for postpartum fever with spontaneous sweating, take with Tang Kuei and Astragalus C. (Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang).
