definition and etiology

» conventional diagnoses: heart disease; pulmonary heart disease; chronic enteritis; chronic dysentery; rectal incontinence; edema due to cirrhosis; nephritis; urinary incontinence; impotence; premature ejaculation; spermatorrhea; frigidity; sterility

» etiology: chronic debilitating illness; excessive sexual activity, esp. if one is exposed to cold after intercourse (Maciocia, p. 138); protracted dampness; old age.

signs and symptoms

signs and symptoms:

• chilliness

• aversion to cold

• lassitude

• apathy

• lack of will power

• deafness

• bright pale white face

• poor appetite

• loose teeth

• loose stools

• diarrhea

• scanty or abundant clear urine

impotence

• premature ejaculation

• spermatorrhea

• frigidity

• sterility

sensation of cold in back

• soreness and aching of back, esp. the lower lumbar region

• weak legs

• edema of the lower limbs

• cold, sore and weak knees

» pulse: deep, weak, slow, fine/minute

» tongue: pale, wet, swollen, flabby

» principle of treatment: tonify and warm the Kidney, esp. Yang; strengthen Ming Men (Life Gate Fire)
