character typology of Reich and Lowen:
EXPRESSIVE/CLINGING (HYSTERIC):

etiology: Child experiences lack of recognition or acceptance; Child feels pushed away, rejected, or unnoticed (especially by the father, often for sexual reasons) and learns that loudness, drama, and drastic events will get attention.

characteristics: Overreactive, easily upset, nervous, exaggerates emotions, dramatic; not concerned with intellectual understanding or details; cries easily, wants parental protection; sexuality may be divorced from heart.

physical appearance: Seductive body, often with child's body on woman's pelvis, upper rigid and lower soft; frightened look, good energy but explosive and uneven, voice overly expressive, doesn't breath out, movement soft and seductive.

strengths: Accessible feelings, empathetic, enthusiastic and spontaneous, good at acting, flexible and sensitive.

life orientation: "I can be free if I do not want." Cannot open his or her heart.
