Peony and Licorice C. = Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang = "Peony and Licorice Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Spasms of the arm and leg muscles, of the abdominal musculature, or of the smooth muscle of the abdominal organs.
tongue and pulse: Lack of tongue coating.
indications: Pain due to Liver Xue Xu (Blood Deficiency). With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as muscular rheumatism, trigeminal neuralgia, shoulder bursitis, intercostal neuralgia, muscle spasms in the waist and back, sciatica, weakness in the legs, toothache, bronchial asthma, spasmodic cough, pancreatitis, intestinal cramps, hemorrhoidal pain, bladder pain, dysuria, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, and primary dysmenorrhea.
cautions and contraindications:
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 12 grams: white peony (bai shao yao), honey-baked licorice (zhi gan cao).
modifications:
» for fixed pain that increases with pressure, substitute red peony (chi shao yao) for white peony (bai shao yao).
» for a slow pulse and other signs of Cold, add dry ginger (gan jiang).
» for a flooding pulse and other signs of Heat, add coptis (huang lian)
» to increase the effectiveness of the formula in treating spasms of the calf muscles, add achyranthes (niu xi) and chaenomeles (mu gua).
» for abdominal pain, add cyperus (xiang fu).
» for Wind rash, add cicada (chan tui), jujube (da zao), and kochia fruit (di fu zi).
