dietary guidelines

eating principles:
• if on a regular diet, try a vegetarian diet high in vegetables and complex carbohydrates. If on a vegetarian diet, try a fruit and vegetable diet or a short fast
• lowfat, whole food diet
diet high in lysine foods: fish, poultry, lima beans, shrimp, mung bean sprouts, yeast

therapeutic foods
:
• during active phase: increase foods that cool the Xue (Blood), dispel Dampness
• during latent phase: increase foods that soothe the Liver, clear toxins, tonify the Kidney, nourish the Xue (Blood)
• foods rich in Vitamins A, B-complex, C, Zinc
• watermelon
• black bass, rye, avocados, sea vegetables, whey, apple, cucumbers, millet, rice polishings, • rice bran, sprouts (Jensen, p. 63)
• mung beans, daikon radish, carrots, brewer's yeast, yogurt, kefir

» Heat in the Xue (Blood):
• black fungus, butter, cheese, gluten, peppermint

» Xue Xu (Blood Deficiency):
• amazake, raspberry, pork, rice, pear, longan, lotus, kidney bean, winter squash, fig, coconut milk, chestnut

fresh juices:
• lemon juice in water on empty stomach in morning
• carrot
• celery
• apple
• lettuce and dandelion (Ni, p. 39)
• parsley (Ni, p. 43)

specific remedies:
• apply mashed lettuce, changing poultice three times daily and drink 1 cup of lukewarm lettuce juice three times daily (Ni, p. 39)

avoid:
foods high in arginine: walnuts, filberts, pecans, brazil nuts, sesame and sunflower seeds, coconut, gelatin, buckwheat, almonds, barley, cashews, cereals, chicken, chocolate, corn, dairy products, meats, oats, and peanuts
• during acute attacks also avoid: chickpeas, lentils, wheat, oats, corn, barley, carob, cocoa, eggplant, tomato, squash, fruits and berries with seeds
• meat, alcohol, hot sauces, spicy foods, fried foods, fatty foods, rich foods, salty foods

» Xue (Blood) Heat:
• sweets, chocolate, coffee, nuts, shrimp, trout, mustard greens

therapeutic considerations:
Enhance immunity: consider constitutional hydrotherapy if the patient can tolerate it.

Lysine 3-6 g per day until healed, in acute conditions, then 500 mg (monitor cholesterol levels) (Schmeisser, 1983, p. 1777ff). Make sure the diet is balanced with the correct ratio of lysine to arginine. Avoid foods that contain arginine. Eat foods with a high lysine to arginine ratio (see Materia Medica).
Vitamin C: A high dose to bowel tolerance is most effective. Vitamin C can also be given IV.
• Vitamin C + bioflavonoids 20-30g per day (Smith, 1983)
• Niacinamide 500-1000 mg per day
• Vitamin B5 250-500 three times daily at first sign of tingling (Smith, 1983, p. 256)
Quercetin: 500 mg 3-4x per day (Marz, p. 422, 1997)
AMP: IM 2-3 ml per day with vitamin B12 1000 mcg (Marz, p. 422, 1997)
Selenium: 200-400 mcg (Marz, p. 422, 1997)
• Zinc 100 mg twice daily (Fitzherbert, 1979, p. 399)
