Zhen Gan Xi Fang Tang = "Sedate the Liver and Extinguish Wind Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Dizziness, headache, a feeling of pressure in the eyes, tinnitus, feverishness in the head, irritability, red face, belching, facial asymmetry, uncontrollable movements, sudden loss of consciousness, coma.
tongue and pulse: Wiry, long, and forceful pulse.
indications: Liver and Kidney Yin Xu (Deficiency) with Liver Yang Rising, which in severe cases leads to Liver Wind Stirring. With the appropriate presentation, this formula may be used in treating conditions conventionally diagnosed as glaucoma, aphasia, apraxia, epilepsy, cerebral arteriosclerosis, essential hypertension, hypertensive encephalopathy, arteriosclerotic heart disease.
cautions and contraindications: Use with caution and appropriate modification in cases with Spleen Qi Xu (Deficiency).
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 10 grams: achyranthes (huai niu xi), hematite (dai zhe shi).
» 9 grams: dragon bone (long gu), oyster shell (mu li), tortoise plastron (gui ban) scrophularia (xuan shen), asparagus (tian men dong), white peony (bai shao yao).
» 3 grams: capillaris (yin chen hao), melia (chuan lian zi), malt (mai ya), licorice (gan cao).
modifications:
» for postpartum fever with vertigo, spasms of the extremities, a red tongue, and a wiry, rapid pulse, add chaenomeles (mu gua) and uncaria (gou teng).
» for hypertension, add prunella (xia ku cao), uncaria (gou teng) and chrysanthemum flower (ju hua).
» for cerebral arteriosclerosis, add haliotis (shi jue ming), red atractylodes (cang zhu), citrus (chen pi), persica (tao ren) and agastache (huo xiang).
» for arteriosclerotic heart disease, add red peony (chi shao) and salvia (dan shen).
» for Kidney Xu (Deficiency), add prepared rehmannia (shu di huang) and cornus (shan zhu yu).
