shen cang = storehouse of the Shen; spirit storehouse; hiding place of god
minor chakra of the lungs (Finkelstein, p. 56)
location: Between the ribs at the medial end of the 2nd intercostal space, 2 cun lateral to the midline.
actions: pacifies the Shen; ventilates the Lung; dissipates Heat; opens the chest; calms dyspnea; relieves cough and asthma due to Kidney Xu (Deficiency); dissolves Phlegm; regulates flow of Qi; redirects Rebellious Qi downward; stimulates Kidney function of reception of Qi; tonifies Kidney (especially Yang)
indications: anxiety; restlessness; mental agitation causing insomnia; loss of desire to live; depression; anorexia; no pleasure in eating; hearing loss; hypersalivation; vomiting; cough; dyspnea; bronchitis; asthma due to Kidney Xu (Deficiency); pulmonary congestion; sensation of distension in the stomach, usually worse around midnight (Mann, p. 50); pain in the chest; chest and ribs feel full; intercostal neuralgia
needle technique: perpendicular or oblique insertion, 0.2 - 0.4 cun, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension which often spreads up and/or down the channel; caution: avoid deep insertion
moxa: 3 - 7 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 10 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
combinations:
» with CV-21 for thoracic fullness and stiffness in the neck (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 262).
