Stephania and Astragalus C. = Fang Ji Huang Qi Tang = "Stephania & Astragalus Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Spontaneous sweating, obese constitution, a heavy sensation in the body, fatigue, edema of the lower limbs or lower abdomen, knee pain and swelling, urinary difficulty.
tongue and pulse: pale tongue with a white coating, and floating pulse.
indications: Wind-Dampness. With the appropriate presentation, this formula may be used in treating conditions conventionally diagnosed as rheumatism, arthritis, obesity, rheumatic heart disease, ascites, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic nephritis, menstrual irregularity, hydrocele of the testis, and edema of the legs.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated for acute, Shi (Excess) edema, and for cases without edema.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 10 grams: astragalus (huang qi).
» 9 grams: stephania (fang ji).
» 6 grams: white atractylodes (bai zhu).
» 3 grams: honey-baked licorice (zhi gan cao), jujube (da zao).
» 1 gram: fresh ginger (sheng jiang).
modifications:
» for abdominal pain, add white peony (bai shao yao).
» for wheezing, add a small amount (1-3 grams) of ephedra (ma huang).
» for severe Dampness with a sensation of heaviness in the lower back and legs, add poria (fu ling) and red atractylodes (cang zhu).
» for chronic nephritis, take with Hoelen Five Herb F. (Wu Ling San).
» with abdominal distention, add citrus (chen pi), chih-ko (zhi ke).
» with Qi Xu (Deficiency), add codonopsis (dang shen).
