Bupleurum and Tang Kuei F. = Xiao Yao San = "Rambling Powder"

signs and symptoms: Hypochondriac pain, abdominal bloating, vertigo, headache, bitter taste in the mouth, fatigue, anorexia, dry mouth and throat, night sweats or alternating fever and chills, irregular menstruation, distended breasts.
tongue and pulse: Pale-red tongue, and wiry, deficient pulse.
indications: Liver Qi Constraint with Xue Xu (Blood Deficiency) or with Internal Heat. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as anemia, neurasthenia, insomnia, fibrocystic breasts, pleurisy, chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, hepatitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, leukorrhea, menstrual irregularity, functional uterine bleeding, and menopausal syndrome.
cautions and contraindications:
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 9 grams: white peony (bai shao yao), poria (fu ling).
» 6 grams: bupleurum (chai hu), Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), white atractylodes (bai zhu).
» 3 grams: honey-baked licorice (gan cao).
» 1 gram: mentha (bo he), roasted ginger (wei jiang).
modifications:
» for more severe hypochondriac pain with distention, omit white atractylodes (bai zhu) and add cyperus (xiang fu).
» for intense, fixed pain due to Xue Yu (Blood Stasis), add moutan bark (mu dan pi), curcuma (yu jin) and scirpus (san leng).
» for chronic hepatitis, add rubia (qian cao gen), cuttlefish (hai piao xiao), codonopsis (dang shen).
