signs and symptoms:Chronic cough, thin sputum, fatigue, shortness of breath, spontaneous sweating, dry mouth.
tongue and pulse:Pale, red tongue with a dry, thin coating, and deficient, rapid or deficient, thin pulse.
indications:Qi and Yin Xu (Deficiency) primarily of the Lung. With the appropriate presentation, this formula may be used in treating conditions conventionally diagnosed as neurasthenia, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary tuberculosis, angina pectoris, supraventricular arrhythmia, rheumatic heart disease, and coronary artery disease. As liquid (Yin), in ADD/hyperactivity, with Kidney Yin Xu (Deficiency) and Yang hyperactivity. (Flaws, 1997, p. 258-259)
cautions and contraindications:Use with extreme caution in cases with high fever, or in which the pathogenic influence has not been resolved; it may prolong the disease. Contraindicated for a person with initial stage of flu in the summer, or mild cough.
ingredients:dosage for two days:
» 6 grams:ginseng (ren shen), ophiopogon (mai men dong), schizandra (wu wei zi).
modifications:
» for profuse sweating with dark, scanty, and difficult urination, add astragalus (huang qi) and Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui).
» for severe coughing, add tussilago (kuan dong hua) and lily bulb (bai he).
» for irritability with with relatively severe insomnia, add zizyphus (suan zao ren) and albizzia bark (he huan pi).
» for marked palpitations, add cinnamon twig (gui zhi), dragon bone (long gu) and oyster shell (mu li).
» for coronary artery disease, add honey-baked licorice (zhi gao cao), salvia (dan shen), carthamus (hong hua) and red peony (chi shao yao).
