St-12 is an important junction of many channels, their branches, divergent channels, muscle channels, and luo longitudinal vessels
location: In the midpoint of the supraclavicular fossa, 4 cun lateral to the midline, Ren Mai.
diagnostic uses: adenoid reflex (Matsumoto)
actions: disperses Yang Shi (Excess) from the chest; ventilates the Lung; sends Qi down from throat and chest; disperses Heat in the four extremities; regulates the flow of Qi and Xue (Blood); frees the channels and invigorates the collateral vessels
indications: insomnia due to nervousness; excessive loquacity; sore throat; throat numb; cervical adenitis; cough; asthma; pertussis; dyspnea; pleurisy; hemoptysis; middle of chest hot and swollen (Mann, p. 12); fullness in the chest; hiccough; stiff neck; scrofula; pain in the supraclavicular fossa; intercostal neuralgia; generalized subcutaneous edema
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, 0.3 - 0.5 cun. Avoid deep insertion due to blood vessel.
moxa: 3 - 5 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 10 minutes of indirect moxibustion with a pole
combinations:
» with Lu-7 (needle first); LI-18, CV-22, SI-16, St-12, Kd-27, Lu-1, CV-17 and LI-4; shi xuan (prick to bleed) to treat "the five neck growths" (Shanghai, p. 604);
» with Lu-2, SI-17, UB-11, UB-17, Lu-2, Lu-5, LI-2, St-45, Kd-1 and Kd-2 for throat blockage with Cold and Hot Obstruction (Shanghai, p. 691);
» with CV-17, CV-14, Lu-10, Lu-7, SI-1, UB-15 and St-14 for cough of bronchitis (Shanghai, p. 592);
» with UB-13, St-36, CV-17 and St-18 for chronic cough resistant to treatment (Shanghai, p. 593);
» with CV-6, Lv-1, Kd-10, CV-4, Lv-3, Kd-2, Sp-6, CV-3, Sp-2, St-10, Ht-1, PC-3 and UB-54/40 for irregular menstruation and/or abnormal uterine bleeding (Shanghai, p. 673).
