definition
Changing the meaning of a situation so it can be viewed more favorably. (Erickson, Rossi, and Ryan, 1985).
"Every access is a reframe." Each time the state-dependent memory, learning, and behavior processes that encode a problem are accessed, there is an opportunity to "reassociate and reorganize" (or reframe) that problem in a manner that resolves it. (Rossi, 1986, p. 69)
An example for a burn patient: when patient complains about itching burns, congratulate and inform that itching is seen as a great sign of healing skin. The reframing occurs when patient associates future itching with healing, instead of irritation. Additional suggestions were frequently offered to change the perception of itching, perhaps to "tingling", for a more gentle reminder of the healing progression. (Zahourek, p. 88).
