Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang = "Tonify the Yang to Restore Five Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Sequelae of Wind-Stroke: hemiplegia, facial paralysis, atrophy of the lower limbs, slurring of the speech, salivation, frequent urination or urinary incontinence, dry stools.
tongue and pulse: white tongue coating, and moderate pulse.
indications: Qi Xu (Deficiency) with Xue Yu (Blood Stasis) Obstructing the Channels. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as sequelae of cerebrovascular accident, sequelae of poliomyelitis, acute myelitis, and sciatica.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated immediately after a stroke due to cerebral hemorrhage. Do not use this formula until the etiology of the stroke is established and cerebral hemorrhage has been ruled out. Before using this formula be sure that the patient has regained clear consciousness, there is no fever or hemorrhage, and the pulse is moderate. Herbal therapy may be required long-term, with improvements usually occurring gradually. Contraindicated in Wind-Stroke patients who have a forceful pulse, in cases of Yin Xu (Deficiency) and Xue (Blood) Heat, or during pregnancy.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 10 grams: astragalus (huang qi).
» 6 grams: Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), cnidium (chuan xiong), red peony (chi shao yao), persica (tao ren), carthamus (hong hua).
» 3 gram: lumbricus (di long).
modifications:
» for facial paralysis, add typhonium tuber (bai fu zi), silkworm (jiang can) and scorpion (quan xie).
» with profuse sputum, add pinellia (ban xia) and siliceous secretions of bamboo (tian zhu huang).
» for a predominance of Cold, including cold limbs, add aconite (fu zi).
» for a predominance of Spleen and Stomach Qi Xu (Deficiency), add codonopsis (dang shen) or ginseng (ren shen) and white atractylodes (bai zhu).
» for a wiry, deficient, and rapid pulse with irritability and insomnia, add gardenia (zhi zi) and dry-fried zizyphus (chao suan zao ren).
» for epigastric focal distention and labored breathing, add lindera (wu yao) and blue citrus (qing pi).
» for reduced appetite and an oppressive feeling in the chest, add chih-ko (zhi ke) and citrus (chen pi).
» to focus the treatment on lower extremity paralysis, add eucommia (du zhong) and achyranthes (niu xi).
