dietary guidelines

eating principles:
» acute nephritis:
• low protein 0.5 g/kg body weight or less
• Sodium-restricted diet
• water fast or alkaline fast
• if oliguria, fluids limited to the urine output plus the water loss from the skin

therapeutic foods:
» after initial acute period:
• black beans, mung beans, adzuki beans, pearl barley, garlic, carp, winter melon, watermelon, cornsilk, sweet rice, lotus root, water chestnuts (Ni, p. 150)
• parsley, peach, pear, mango, cucumber, apple peel tea (steeped), watercress, melons, greenbeans, potato broth, collards, beets, asparagus in small amounts, parsley in small amounts, grapes (Jensen)
• foods that tonify the Kidney

fresh juices:
• celery, parsley, and asparagus (Jensen, p.. 63)
• carrot and parsley
• cucumber
• carrot (Walker, p. 125)
• spinach (Walker, p. 125)
• celery, parsley, and juniper berry tea (Jensen, p. 63)
• pomegranate (Jensen, p. 63)
• cranberry

food contraindications: (Jensen)
• asparagus and parsley with extreme kidney inflammation, rutabaga
• stimulating foods, salty, sour, spicy foods, alcohol, coffee, high protein foods, meat, fresh garlic, green onion, chive, red pepper, alcohol
• ginseng

specific remedies:
• cook soup with adzuki beans, winter melon rind, water melon rind and cornsilk, three times daily (Ni, p. 150)
• lotus root tea, four times per day (Ni, p. 150)
• watermelon fast (Ni, p. 150)
• cornsilk tea (Ni, p. 150)
• cook soup from carp, adzuki beans, wintermelon and green onions. Start with 5 cups water reduced to 3 cups. Drink and sweat (Ni, p. 150)

therapeutic foods
» Chronic Nephritis:
• ginger, Chinese black dates, sweet rice, soybeans, wintermelon, carp, yams, mung beans, black beans

specific remedies:
• rice porridge and add ginger, cinnamon, Chinese black dates, eat twice daily
• duck soup (Ni, p. 151)
• cook carp with soybeans, wintermelon, and green onions into soup. Eat per day for at least 20 days (Ni, p. 151)
• rice porridge with yams (Ni, p. 151)
• crush entire watermelon with rind and slowly cook to a thick syrup, take 2 tbsp. syrup in warm water three times daily (Ni, p. 15l)
• using a knife, make a triangular hole in l.5 kg watermelon, reinvigorate the flesh and place 70 g peeled garlic cloves inside the watermelon. Cover the hole with the rind and steam the watermelon with the garlic and then eat whole thing while hot (Lu, p. 142)
• eat 1-2 cucumbers or drink the juice (Lu, p. 142)
• make a small whole hole in an egg and insert 7 white peppercorns. Wrap in damp paper and steam until cooked. Discard shell and eat. Adults twice daily, children per day (Chao-liang, Qing-rong, Bao-zhen, p. 89)
