nasal irrigation: A mixture of sea salt and water, at a ratio of one teaspoon per cup can be very effective in reducing mucous membrane inflammation and facilitating drainage. Holding your head over the sink, tilted to one side, slowly pour the solution into the upper nostril and let it drain out the lower nostril. Tip your head forward, so that the nose is lower than the throat to keep the water from going down the throat. Once the first side is complete, rotate your head and rinse the other direction. Alternatively, the solution can be drawn back into the throat and spit out if the sinuses are involved and you want to irrigate them.
