da chang shu = large intestine's hollow/correspondence
Shu Associated point of the Da Chang (Large Intestine); receives a vessel from the Large Intestine
location: 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of L-4.
actions: regulates the Qi of the Fu (Yang organs); regulates the Intestines and Stomach; transforms Stagnation; "initiates bowel movement for extruding the impurities" (Finkelstein, p. 45); resolves Damp-Heat; warms Cold and dries Damp-Cold; benefits the lower back and knees
indications: abdominal pain and distension, esp. in the small intestine and colon; borborygmi; enteritis; appendicitis; dysentery; stabbing pain around navel; constipation; flatulence; diarrhea; rectal prolapse; hemorrhoids; difficult or painful defecation; painful urination; little urine; urethritis; low back pain or strain; spasm of lumbar muscles; pain in sacroiliac joint; sciatica; pain cold and painful; weak legs
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, for most indications, 0.8 - 1.2 cun, producing a sensation of local soreness and distension in lower back;
for sciatica: oblique insertion, with the needle angled slightly away from spine, 1.2 - 1.5 cun, producing an electrical, numb sensation possibly spreading to leg;
for arthritis of the sacroiliac: transverse insertion, connecting with UB-27, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension, possibly reaching sacroiliac joint;
moxa: 5 - 10 cones of direct moxa; 10 - 20 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole

» with UB-30, GV-4, thread St-38 to UB-57, thread GB-34 to Sp-9 for progressive muscular dystrophy (Shanghai, p. 212);
» with St-25, St-36 and CV-12 "stimulates growth in children who eat much and yet remain frail", i.e., with failure to thrive (Finkelstein, p. 45);
» with St-36, Kd-16, Sp-13, PC-6, LI-11 and UB-24 for acute appendicitis (Shanghai, p. 640)
