Gentiana C. = Long Dan Xie Gan Tang = "Gentiana Longdancao Decoction to Drain the Liver"

signs and symptoms: Headache, dizziness, red and sore eyes, hearing loss, ear infection, bitter taste in the mouth, irritability; difficult and painful urination with a sensation of heat in the urethra, pain, itching or swelling in the external genitalia, or foul-smelling leukorrhea.
tongue and pulse: red tongue with a yellow coating, and wiry, rapid, forceful pulse.
indications: Liver and Gallbladder Damp-Heat. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as migraine headache, conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, acute glaucoma, retinitis, suppurative otitis media, herpes zoster, intercostal neuralgia, gallstones, urethritis, cystitis, endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, epididymitis, vaginitis, leukorrhea, itching and pain in the genital areas, venereal ulcer, inguinal lymphadenitis, orchitis, eczema in the genital areas, and herpes simplex.
cautions and contraindications: This formula should not be taken long-term or in large doses, nor in cases with Spleen Xu (Deficiency) or Injury to the Fluids.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 9 grams: scute (huang qin), raw rehmannia (sheng di huang).
» 6 grams: gardenia (zhi zi), alisma (ze xie), plantago seed (che qian zi), akebia (mu tong), Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), bupleurum (chai hu).
» 3 grams: gentiana (long dan cao).
» 1 gram: licorice (gan cao).
modifications:
» for pale-red leukorrhea and a wiry, rapid pulse, add red peony (chi shao yao) and lotus stamen (lian xu).
» for tremors, add gambir (uncaria) (gou teng) and fritillaria cirrhosa (chuan bei mu).
