process paradigm
process work: basic principles
channels: The modes in which we perceive. They include the following:
» visual: perceiving with reference to sight
» auditory: hearing and noticing information as sound
» proprioception: noticing feelings of the body such as pressure, temperature
» kinesthesia: sense of movement of the muscles and structure
» relationships: noticing information as if it were observed by or coming from another person
» world: perceiving information as happening in or noticed by the world at large
channel change: Shift to another modality of awareness, often occurs as the behavior and awareness come close to the unacceptable material (edge).
double signal: When the primary and secondary processes carry different messages and are incongruent, i.e., when two different messages are expressed at the same time.
dreambody: A description of the experience we have of our bodies, occurring when we relate images to body feelings and symptoms. The dreambody is usually experienced as a disturbance to the real body and first comes to awareness in the form of symptoms.
edge: The limit of our usual behavior and thinking, of what we believe we can do. A description of something we think is impossible for us to experience or live with.
mythbody: The transpersonal dreambody; a body feeling that is usually beyond our awareness threshold. The images and stories associated with it have little to do with our everyday life but are usually connected to personal myths.
personal myth: The generalization of a childhood dream or memory that becomes an organizing factor in the creation of lifestyles, chronic symptoms, and issues. It may also organize the last experiences in life.
primary process: Everything that is connected to our personal identity; i.e., the process that we are aware of and is our conscious identity.
process: The flow of signals in channels over short periods of time, and the changing experiences of identities throughout a lifetime.
processing: Working with signals or bits and pieces of information, and allowing them to unfold.
secondary process: Experiences that we do not perceive as belonging to our personal identity. We perceive them either as happening to us, or as emotions and experiences we are reluctant to identify with, such as viruses, anger, fear, power, and numinosity.
signals: Bits and pieces of information, occurring in the various channels.
unconsciousness: The state of being identified with perception (unaware of signals or meanings), i.e., being unable to be aware of, notice, or follow perceptions.
