location: 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of T-1, level with GV-13.
actions: dispels Wind, Wind-Cold, Wind-Heat and Cold; resolves Shi (Excess) Heat, esp. External Heat; treats madness with contractions, i.e., convulsions; connects the Du Mai (Governing Vessel) to the Shu Associated points; distributes Bladder Qi and Jing-Ye (Yin) to all the dorsal Shu points, thus cooling them (Finkelstein, p. 38); removes Obstruction of Qi circulation of the Tai Yang channels (Bladder and Small Intestine) and Du Mai (Governing Vessel) of the upper back; influences the parathyroids (Worsley, 1975, p. B-20); regulates the Lung; diffuses Lung Qi; sedates cough; expands and relaxes the chest; strengthens all bones and joints; facilitates Xue (Blood) flow; relaxes the muscles, sinews and tendons; invigorates the collateral vessels
indications: nervous agitation; headache accompanied by chills; tidal fever; high fever and chills with no sweating; dizziness; epilepsy; infantile convulsions; generalized spasms throughout the body; throat blockage; influenza; cough; sore throat; dysphonia; fullness in the chest; shortness of breath; common cold; bronchitis; pneumonia; pleurisy; abdominal distension; generalized muscular rheumatism (Mann, p. 32); neck and back pain; muscular spasm in the back; low back pain; stiffness along the spine; soreness and pain of the interscapular region; rheumatoid arthritis; ankylosing spondylitis; tuberculosis of the bones; osteoarthritis; various joint problems including painful obstruction with joint deformity; numbness in the limbs; pain and inability to bend the knee
needle technique: oblique insertion, 0.3 - 0.6 cun, inferiorly, or toward the spine, 0.5 - 1.0 cun, producing a local sensation of distension, soreness and numbness sometimes spreading between the ribs;
moxa: 3 - 7 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 15 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
