qigong: introduction

The basic standing posture is very important because there are two kinds of Qigong, Waidan Qigong and Neidan Qigong. Waidan Qigong uses the arms and the legs as pumps to pump Qi (intrinsic energy) into the center of the body, thus giving more energy to circulate in the center. Most people start with Waidan Qigong. Wai means “outside" or "external” and dan means “elixir" or "power substance.”

Once you have enough energy in the center so you can grab hold and control it (there is something there to play with), then you graduate to Neidan Qigong which means “interior” Qigong. The purpose of all Qigong is to consciously control the energy flowing through the channels. And if you know Chinese medicine, you can control it in a proper way.

Qigong is an excellent internal self-healing method, because you can learn to send energy anywhere in the body - toward or away from any organ. You can tonify or sedate simply by moving Qi through your own channels.

Qigong means “to have craftsmanship, or power of control, or expertise in working with your own Qi". (Allee)
