signs and symptoms: High fever, irritability, delirium, impaired consciousness, coma due to wind-stroke, childhood convulsions, stiffness of the tongue, and cold extremities.
tongue and pulse: red or deep-red tongue, and rapid pulse.
indications: Heated Phlegm Obstructing the Orifices or Fire Toxin. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as acute encephalitis, acute meningitis, coma from cerebral injury, cerebrovascular accident, schizophrenia, septicemia, lockjaw, pneumonia, acute hepatitis, hepatic coma, and dysentery.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated during pregnancy. To prevent mercury poisoning, cinnabar (zhu sha) should not be taken in large amounts, for long-term, or heated.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 3 grams: curcuma (yu jin).
» 1 gram: coptis (huang lian), scute (huang qin), gardenia (zhi zi), realgar (xiong huang).
» 0.5 grams: ox gallstone (niu huang), rhinoceros horn (xi jiao) (water buffalo horn should be substituted), cinnabar (zhu sha), pearl (zhen zhu).
» 0.25 grams: musk (she xiang), borneol (bing pian).
administration: Available as patent medicine. Grind the ingredients into powder and form into 3 gram pills with honey. Take one pill 2-3 times daily with warm water. Children should take one-half the adult dosage.
modifications:
» for patients with a weak pulse, take with a decoction of ginseng (ren shen).
» for patients with a full pulse, take with a decoction of lonicera (jin yin hua) and mentha (bo he).
