Poultice or plaster

botanicals

definition

poultice or plaster

» the use of a poultice/plaster allows the herbs to be in contact with the affected area. Poultices are recommended and are very useful in various congestive conditions, e.g. traumatized areas, enlarged glands, certain infections, lung conditions, skin eruptions, insect bites, drawing deep splinters.

directions:

1. prepare the recommended herbs as instructed: mix powdered herbs and filler (cornmeal, flour or flaxseed meal), 1 part herb and 1 part filler; add enough water to make a paste; or grind fresh root or leaf with enough water to make the herb moist and spreadable; fresh herbs need no filler

2. moisten a thin, clean cotton cloth, gauze or cheesecloth, that is twice the size of the area to be treated

3. spread a thin layer (about 1/4 inch thick) of paste or fresh herbs onto the cloth; leave some uncovered space at the edges of the cloth

4. fold cloth over so the herbs are enveloped

5. place the poultice flush over the area to be treated

6. cover poultice with a hot damp cloth, hot water bottle or heating pad

7. place dry cloth over this or cover area with plastic to seal in the moisture

8. leave poultice on for the prescribed time

note: poultices are not reused, especially with infections
