Major Xanthoxylum C. = Da Jian Zhong Tang = "Major Construct the Middle Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Severe abdominal pain worse with pressure, a strong sensation of cold in the epigastrium, vomiting, inability to eat, cold hands and feet.
tongue and pulse: White, slippery tongue coating, and thin and tight or slow and wiry (or in especially severe cases, hidden) pulse.
indications: Spleen Yang Xu (Deficiency). With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, abdominal pain due to round worms, chronic cholecystitis, peritonitis, acute appendicitis, uncomplicated intestinal constriction, intestinal flaccidity, intestinal spasms, intestinal colic, and urinary calculi.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated in cases with Damp-Heat or Yin and Xue Xu (Blood Deficiency).
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 30 grams: maltose (yi tang).
» 6 grams: dry ginger (gan jiang), ginseng (ren shen).
» 3 grams: xanthoxylum (hua jiao).
modifications:
» for roundworms, reduce the dosage of maltose (yi tang) and add mu me (wu mei), areca seed (bing lang) and quisqualis fruit (shi jun zi).
» for greater pain relief, add salvia (dan shen), corydalis (yan hu suo) and saussurea (mu xiang).
» for nausea, add pinellia (ban xia) and fresh ginger (sheng jiang).
» for numb hands and feet, add cinnamon bark (gui zhi).
» with constipation, add rhubarb (da huang) and mirabilitum (mang xiao).
» with Xue Yu (Blood Stasis), add scirpus (san leng) and zedoria (e zhu).
