standard: 0.0-0.3 mg/dl
healthy: 0.0-0.2 mg/dl

conditions that can exhibit an increase in direct bilirubin:
Liver disease (hepatitis); Hemolytic disease; Obstruction of biliary system.

conditions that can exhibit a decrease in direct bilirubin:
No known clinical significance.

in general: if direct bilirubin is:
• < 20 % of total bilirubin: hemolysis, benign hyperbilirubinemia (Gilbert's disease)
• 20-40% of total bilirubin: Probably liver and not biliary obstructive disease.
• 40-60% of total bilirubin: either liver or post-hepatic jaundice.
• >50% of total bilirubin: Post-hepatic not liver jaundice.
• >40 mg/dl: Hepatocellular not extrahepatic obstruction.
