signs and symptoms: Persistent uterine bleeding, bleeding between periods, irregular menstruation (early or late), lower abdominal pain and distention, infertility, dry lips and mouth, low-grade fever at dusk, warm palms and soles, lower back pain and chills.
tongue and pulse:
indications: Ren (Conception) Channel and Chong (Penetrating) Channel Cold and Xu (Deficient) with Xue Yu (Blood Stasis). With the appropriate presentation, this formula may be used in treating conditions conventionally diagnosed as emotional disorders, frostbite, eczema, menopausal disorders, infertility, menstrual irregularity, functional uterine bleeding, leukorrhea, primary dysmenorrhea, polycystic ovaries, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, and habitual abortion.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated in cases with abdominal masses due to Xue Yu (Blood Stasis) from Shi (Excess).
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 6 grams: Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), cnidium (chuan xiong), white peony (bai shao yao), gelatin (e jiao), ophiopogon (mai men dong), moutan bark (mu da pi), pinellia (ban xia), fresh ginger (sheng jiang).
» 3 grams: evodia (wu zhu yu), cinnamon (gui zhi), ginseng (ren shen), licorice (gan cao).
modifications:
» for more severe Qi Stagnation, add cyperus (xiang fu) and lindera (wu yao).
» for Qi Xu (Deficiency), add astragalus (huang qi).
» for persistent bleeding after miscarriage, omit licorice (gan cao) and add salvia (dan shen), leonurus (yi mu cao) and achyranthes (niu xi).
» for infertility due to Xue Xu (Blood Deficiency) and Cold, add blue citrus (qing pi) and cyperus (xiang fu). The decoction should be taken daily during the menstrual flow only.
