» contraindicated in acute inflammation of mucosal surfaces, especially urinary tract inflammation due to the local irritating effect of its volatile hydrocarbon, cadinene (Brinker, 1989 & 1996; Felter and Lloyd, De Smet)

» mildly burning skin irritant, affects both epidermal and endodermal tissue; 8-20 g is noted to cause intoxication; characterized by sensation of heat, erythema, skin eruptions, and a burning gastric pain; nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may ensue with or without abdominal pain; fever, renal irritation may occur; increase in frequency and fullness of pulse followed by muscle and joint pain, fasciculations, twitches, fibrillations; delirium, miosis, and then coma or death due to respiratory paralysis (Cain, p. 461; Felter and Lloyd, p. 623; Ellingwood, p. 460; von Oettingen, p. 317)
