Ginseng and Astragalus C. = Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang = "Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Spontaneous sweating, aversion to cold, intermittent fever worse with exertion, thirst for warm beverages, poor appetite, shortness of breath, lassitude, tendency to curl up, weak limbs, prolapse, pale complexion, loose stools. Also used to improve a weak constitution or in debility in the aftermath of a severe illness.
tongue and pulse: pale tongue with a thin, white coating, and flooding, deficient pulse in general, or deficient, rootless pulse at the right Guan position.
indications: Spleen and Stomach Qi Xu (Deficiency) leading to Yang Sinking. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as myasthenia gravis, neurasthenia, anorexia, chronic bronchitis, abdominal distention, gastric prolapse, chronic hepatitis, recurrent miscarriage, functional uterine bleeding, leukorrhea, prolapsed uterus, postpartum problems (including urinary incontinence, lochioschesis, and insufficient lactation), prolapsed rectum, hemorrhoids, diarrhea, chronic nephritis, impotence, hernia.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated for fever due to Heat from Yin Xu (Deficiency).
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 9 grams: white atractylodes (bai zhu).
» 6 grams: astragalus (huang qi), ginseng (ren shen), Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), bupleurum (chai hu).
» 3 grams: honey-baked licorice (zhi gan cao), cimicifuga (sheng ma), citrus (chen pi).
modifications:
» for pronounced aversion to cold, add cinnamon bark (rou gui).
» for pronounced headache, add vitex (man jing zi). If it becomes severe, also add cnidium (chuang xiong).
» for headache at the vertex or pain inside the head, add ligusticum (gao ben).
» for vertigo and headache, add cnidium (chuan xiong) and pinellia (ban xia).
» for diminished visual acuity or double vision, add lycium fruit (gou qi zi) and cnidium (chuang xiong).
» for chronic rhinitis, add xanthium (can er zi) and magnolia flower (xin yi hua).
» for severe pain, add asarum (xi xin).
» for generalized pain or a sensation of heaviness in the body (due to Dampness), take with Hoelen Five Herb F. (Wu Ling San) and omit cinnamon bark (gui zhi).
» for abdominal pain, increase the dosage of honey-baked licorice (zhi gan cao) and add white peony (bai shao yao).
» for abdominal distention, add chih-shih (zhi shi), magnolia bark (hou po), sausurrea (mu xiang) and cardamon (sha ren).
» for diarrhea due to excessive worry, add sausurrea (mu xiang).
» for recurrent miscarriage, add eucommia (du zhong) and cuscuta (tu si zi).
» for leukorrhea, add red atractylodes (cang zhu) and phellodendron (huang bai).
» for hernial disorders, add tangerine seed (ju he), fennel (xiao hui xiang) and lychee seed (li zhi he).
» for constipation due to Spleen Xu (Deficiency), add honey and sesame oil.
» for painful urinary difficulty in the elderly, add alisma (ze xie) and akebia (mu tong).
» for enuresis in children, add mantis egg-case (sang piao xiao) and black cardamon (yi zhi ren).
