yao yang guan = lumbar yang's gate; lumbar yang's hinge
location: On the posterior midline, inferior to the spinous process of the 4th lumbar vertebra.
actions: reinforces the Kidney and regulates the Kidney Qi; warms the Xue (Blood) Chamber and the Palace of Jing (Essence); dispels Cold-Damp, esp. in the Lower Warmer; distributes Zhong (Ancestral) Qi to the pelvis; influences testes (Worsley, 1975, p. B-20); benefits the lumbar spine and knees; regulates the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) and Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel)
indications: excessive saliva; persistent vomiting; lower abdominal distension; chronic enteritis; hemorrhoids; dysentery; strangury; irregular menstruation; leukorrhea; bloody vaginal discharge; spermatorrhea; impotence; lumbosacral pain; weakness and/or paralysis of lower limbs; paresthesia and/or loss of sensation in lower limbs; knee pain and stiffness
needle technique: oblique insertion superiorly, 0.5 - 1.0 cun, slanting slightly to one side, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension; too deep an insertion will send a numb, electrical sensation into the leg(s)
moxa: 3 - 7 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 15 minutes of indirect moxibustion with a pole

» with UB-23 (D) dispels Cold-Damp (Finkelstein, p. 77);
» with GV-4 and GV-5 for multiple neuritis; injection therapy may be used (Shanghai, p. 210);
» with UB-23 and UB-54/40 relaxes lumbar muscles (Finkelstein, p. 77);
