Scorpion

• No-one chooses the company of a scorpion: as The World Book Encyclopedia puts it, "Most people fear the scorpion because of its sting and ugly appearance". It is a venomous creature scurrying around with its weapon held high, coiled, ready to strike. It makes no distinctions, for all are its enemies.

• As Kent would say, this is just about all there is to the story of Scorpion the remedy. One can hardly help cringing as one reads the proving for the first time. This composite person is not one whom one would choose to know. Joseph Stalin, Saddam Hussein - these are the individuals who come most readily to mind.

• Perhaps the single most remarkable symptom is the following: "Rocks, desire to feel and crawl behind." It serves notice that the remedy bears the true stamp of the arachnid. The proving paints an image of an outcast, driven insane by isolation, burning with hatred and resentment to any and all others, living in fear of attack, and determined to wreak his vengeance, unfettered by any vestige of human sensibilities. With this framework in mind, let us choose a few exemplars from the pathogenesis of the remedy:

• "Anxiety, walking ameliorates."
• "Delusion, alone in the world, she is."
• "Delusion, averse to her company, people are."
• "Delusion, persecuted."
• "Delusion, strangers, surrounded by."

• This is the heart of the remedy. From this everything else springs. Forsaken, sensation of isolation. All this is root of the hatred, the violence, the desire to strike, etc. It all arises from the sense of being an outcast, one scorned by society.

• The symptom "delusion, strong, he is," is merely over-compensation for this rejection, and is not ultimately effective. His real state is "fear, overpowering," from which arises "Moral feeling, want of;" "abusive;" "violent anger;" "destructive, hatred"; "kill, desire to, child, their own;" "malicious, injure someone, desire to;" "fight, wants to strike, desires to strike;" "quarrelsome;" "thoughts, evil, of;" "violent, trifles, at;" "contradict, disposition to;" "quick to act;" "deceitful;" "escape, attempts to."

• Few pangs of conscience trouble the Scorpion, because there are: "Moral feeling, want of;" "indifference;" "indifference, welfare of others, to;" "indifference, opinion of others, to." But in some portion of the being the awful quality of his deeds are registered, for we have: "Fear, impulses, of his own;" fear, injuring others, of;" "fear, thoughts, of his own;" memory, weakness of, done, for what has just" - he wants to forget his terrible deeds!
