definition
electrospinal therapy
1. electrospinal therapy is a method of eliciting reflexes by the application of an induced electrical current to various spinal segments
2. use only sinusoidal current
3. active electrode is double disc electrode covered with sponge which is placed over the spinal nerve exits, one disc on either side of spinous process
4. disc electrodes are attached to a handle with an interrupter control switch
5. inactive electrode is pad placed over sacrum
6. current increased to patient tolerance
7. stimulating application: apply current for 5 seconds, rest 5 seconds using interrupter switch, repeat 6-8 times
8. inhibiting application: apply continual, non-surging, non-interrupted sinusoidal to patient tolerance for 3 min.
note: C1, T4 etc. refer to spinal nerve level; see chart below
spinal nerve levels:
C1 - between occiput and spine of axis
C2 - middle of spine of axis
C3 - end of spine of axis
C4 - spine of 3rd cervical vert.
C5 - spine of 4th cervical vert.
C6 - spine of 5th cervical vert.
C7 - spine of 6th cervical vert.
C8 - spine of 7th cervical vert.
T1 - between 7th cervical vert. and first thoracic spine
T2 - between spines of 1st and 2nd thoracic vert.
T3 - between spines of 2nd and 3rd thoracic vert.
T4 - spine of 3rd thoracic vert.
T5 - spine of 4th thoracic vert.
T6 - spine of 5th thoracic vert.
T7 - between spines of 5th and 6th thoracic vert.
T8 - between spines of 6th and 7th thoracic vert.
T9 - spine of 7th thoracic vert.
T10 - spine of 8th thoracic vert.
T11 - between spines of 9th and 10th thoracic vert.
T12 - spine of 11th thoracic vert.
L1 - spine of 12th thoracic vert.
L2 - between spines of 1st and 2nd lumbar vert.
L3 - spine of 3rd lumbar vert.
L4 - spine of 4th lumbar vert.
L5 - spine of 5th lumbar vert.
vagus nerve control:
1. stimulation - C7
2. inhibition - T3, T4
