Diagnoses

definition and etiology

» conventional diagnoses: anorexia; dyspepsia; eructations; stomach ulcer

» etiology: during the recovery phase of exogenous Heat diseases when Stomach Yin may be damaged by residual Heat; as part of general Yin depletion during chronic illness (EAMSS, p. 227); eating late at night; chronic lifestyle patterns which deplete Stomach Yin, such as "an irregular diet and eating habits, mostly due to eating late at night, skipping meals, 'grabbing a quick bite' during a short and hectic lunch hour, worrying about work while eating, going straight back to work after a meal." (Maciocia, p. 269)

signs and symptoms

» signs and symptoms:

• fever or sensation of heat in the afternoon

dry mouth, lips and throat, esp. in the afternoon

• thirst but desiring to drink only sips or not at all

• little or no appetite

• feeling of fullness after eating

• dry heaves

• belching

epigastric pain

• dry stools including constipation

» pulse: floating, empty in middle right (Stomach) position; thin and rapid overall

» tongue: red; peeled, no coating or coating with "no root" in center (Maciocia, p. 268)
