Citrus and Pinellia C. = Er Chen Tang = "Two-Cured Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Coughing with copious, white sputum that is easily expectorated, stuffy sensation in the chest, palpitations, nausea or vomiting, dizziness.
tongue and pulse: Swollen tongue with a thick, white, greasy coating, and slippery pulse.
indications: Spleen Qi Xu (Deficiency) with Spleen Distressed by Dampness. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as upper respiratory tract infection, Meniere's disease, chronic bronchitis, goiter, chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, nausea and vomiting, hangover, and eclampsia.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated for cases with cough associated with Lung Yin Xu (Deficiency).
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 6 grams: pinellia (ban xia), poria (fu ling).
» 3 grams: citrus (chen pi), honey-baked licorice (zhi gan cao).
» 7 pieces: fresh ginger (sheng jiang).
» 1 piece: mume (wu mei).
modifications:
» for insomnia and a desire to sleep during the day that worsens after meals, add white atractylodes (bai zhu) and acorus (shi chang pu).
» for Damp-Heat in the Upper Warmer, add scute (huang qin), gardenia (zhi zi), apricot seed (xing ren) and platycodon (jie geng).
» for Damp-Heat in the Middle Warmer, add coptis (huang lian), agastache (huo xiang), magnolia bark (hou po), and coix (yi yi ren).
» for Damp-Heat in the Lower Warmer, add sophora bark (ku shen), phellodendron (huang bai) and talc (hua shi).
» for Wind-Dampness, add clematis (wei ling xian), gentiana (qin jiao), xanthium fruit (cang er zi) and cinnamon twig (gui zhi).
» for cough with copious sputum due to Lung Cold, add ephedra (ma huang) and apricot seed (xing ren).
» for vomiting due to Cold in the Stomach, add dried ginger (gan jiang) and cardamon (sha ren).
» for chronic Phlegm in the Channels and flesh leading to rubbery nodules, add oyster shell (mu li), scrophularia (xuan shen), laminaria (kun bu), sargassum (hai dai).
» for Spleen and Kidney Yang Xu (Deficiency) characterized by coughing of thin, watery sputum, a deep pulse, and urinary difficulty, add cinnamon bark (rou gui) and aconite (fu zi).
» for concurrent Dryness, substitute trichosanthes fruit (gua lou) and fritillaria (chuan bei mu) for pinellia (ban xia).
