location: 1 cun superior to the umbilicus on the midline of the abdomen.
actions: balances endocrine and lymphatic systems; stabilizes all secretions (Finkelstein, p. 87); warms the Middle Warmer; dispels Cold; moves Spleen and Earth; regulates the Spleen and Stomach; regulates Intestines and stops diarrhea; regulates Bladder Qi; dissolves Damp; assists Small Intestine in its functions of separating liquid from matter, the Clear from the Turbid, and maintaining water balance (Finkelstein, p. 87); helps drainage of fluids via urination to harden stools (D); lifts rectal prolapse (D); clears Damp-Heat; promotes diuresis
indications: coldness and swelling; epistaxis; lack of appetite; vomiting; dyspnea; indigestion; abdominal pain and swelling, esp. periumbilical pain; stomachache; empty feeling in stomach; prolapsed stomach; tympanites; borborygmi; ascites; diarrhea; flatulence; rectal prolapse; edema; nephritis; urinary retention; painful urination; lower back pain
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, 0.5 - 1.0 cun; according to some older texts, needling contraindicated in cases of swelling and distension (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 354)
moxa: 5 - 10 cones of direct moxa; 10 - 20 minutes of indirect moxibustion with a pole
combinations:
» with Sp-9 for edema, esp. periumbilical (Shanghai, p. 286; Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 155), usually with moxa, given contraindication against needling while swelling or distension present;
» with CV-6 to open the Water Pathways for diuresis (Finkelstein, p. 87);
» with CV-3, Kd-7, UB-58, Kd-5 and Sp-9 to open the Water Pathways (Finkelstein, p. 87);
» with CV-11 regulates water metabolism and induces diuresis (Finkelstein, p. 87);
» with UB-20 (D) acts directly on the Middle Warmer (Finkelstein, p. 87);
» with (d. D) and St-28 (D) then needle St-36 and CV-7: "For intolerable water-related diseases that present with abdominal fullness and vacuity swelling that refuses to abate." (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 354);
» with CV-8, CV-5, CV-17, CV-7, GV-4, CV-11, CV-4, CV-6, Kd-27, GB-26, St-13, Sp-21 and tender points using moxa sticks (10-15 minutes) or 5-7 cones of moxa on a slice of ginger on two or three points each day of daily treatment for chyluria (Shanghai, p. 586).
